Italian Street Painting
Observe internationally recognized guest artist, Julie Kirk-Purcell as she creates her Italian Street Painting art. The artist will share her expertise and fascination with the ephemeral technique of street painting. Street painting dates back to the 15th or 16th centuries when war veterans returning home, often disabled or unable to make a living, turned to the streets in an effort to support themselves. They would draw pictures on the sidewalk, putting out a basket in hopes of donations. Until recently, due to the temporary nature of the art work, it has not been visually documented. The tradition is continued today around the world - some painters work on their own on various city streets, and many attend festivals dedicated to this unique art form.
Julie Kirk-Purcell has been commissioned internationally to complete a number of murals, sculptures, graphic works and paintings for individuals and organizations including the 2004 Rose Bowl, Disney Entertainment, Howard Hughes Corporation, Lexus Corporation. Ms. Kirk currently participates and is recognized internationally in street painting events. In 2003, she was awarded 1st Place, Semplici Division in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy. Currently, she is a faculty member at California State University.
